AutoRig is a custom Houdini Digital Asset I developed to simplify and accelerate vehicle rigging and animation. It’s designed specifically for cars with up to four wheels and provides an intuitive setup for both animators and TDs.
Key features include:
Automatic wheel rigging based on wheel size – the wheels rotate correctly depending on their diameter, with front-wheel steering supported out of the box.
Suspension simulation – shock absorbers react to terrain, giving the vehicle a more realistic bounce and weight.
Tire deformation – tires can be deflated, and their shape deforms dynamically to simulate pressure and load.
Surface projection – the system detects and conforms to the driving surface, projecting wheel contact points to match ground topology.
Drift control – artists can either animate drift manually or enable procedural drift simulation using internal physics logic.
Jump behavior – the rig supports realistic vehicle jumps with proper suspension response on landing.
